You may not feel pretty enough. You may feel like you haven’t “made it.” You may wonder if God loves you as much as He loves someone else. If you have these or similar self-deprecating thoughts, you’re letting Satan get the better of you. None of those lies are true because you are a child of God! That is your identity. You don’t need to doubt it.
When you accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior, your identity was completely transformed. He pulled you out of darkness and placed you in His Kingdom (Colossians 1:13). He made a new creation in you (2 Corinthians 5:17).
You were lost, but now you’re found.
You were bound, but now you’re free.
You were dead, but now you’re alive.
You were sin, but now you’re the righteousness of God.
You were a slave, but now you’re a son.
You were darkness, but now you’re light.
That sounds and is fantastic, but why and how does that relate to your identity?
Two Kingdoms
The Word teaches us that there are two “spiritual” kingdoms, one of darkness and one of light, the realm of Satan and the Kingdom of God.
In Matthew 12:22, we read about Jesus casting out a demon. The Pharisees accuse Him of doing so by Beelzebub, the ruler of demons.
Jesus knows their thoughts and responds in Matthew 12:25-26:
“Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand. If Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then will his kingdom stand?”
In this passage, He indicates that “Satan” has a kingdom. Then Jesus says:
Matthew 12:28
“But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, surely the kingdom of God has come upon you.”
Here, Jesus speaks of the Kingdom of God.
So, there are two spiritual Kingdoms. One of darkness and one of light, the kingdom of Satan and the Kingdom of God.
As long as you haven’t accepted Jesus, you are in the kingdom of darkness. You’re not even aware of it until you get to know Jesus. Only through Jesus can you enter the Kingdom of God (John 3:5), and that’s exactly what you did when you said “yes” to Him.
Your Spirit is Changed
When you were placed in the Kingdom of Light, something changed in you. But where did that happen?
Just as God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, the Trinity, so are you a tripartite being. You are you, but you have a spirit, soul, and body.
1 Thessalonians 5:23
“Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Your “flesh” is your “body.” Looking at your outward appearance, not much has changed. Your body remains the same after rebirth.
Your “soul” is your “sensory” self. What you feel, hear, taste, smell, see, forms your thoughts. That’s your soul. It remains the same after rebirth.
What is completely new about you is your “spirit.” It “was” dead, it “was” in darkness, it “was” contaminated with sin. But now you are “born again”! You have now received the nature of Christ.
God now sees you as “perfect” in Christ (Colossians 2:10).
A Child of God
Through the renewal of your spirit, you can now be a child of God. That wasn’t possible for a long time. After the fall of Adam and Eve, who were themselves “born of God” but spiritually died due to the fall, people were only born from blood, flesh, and the will of a man.
Biologically and naturally born, merely flesh and blood. Not born of God but of man.
Then came Jesus!
John 1:12-13
“But as many as received Him [Jesus], to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.”
You are no longer a “natural, fleshly” child but a “supernatural, spiritual” child! And because you are now born of God and therefore a child of God, you no longer see yourself as the old person you were before Christ. That person is gone, dead.
Galatians 2:20
“I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me.”
You “were” a slave to sin and “were” a slave to the god of this world. But now you are no longer a slave, you are no longer in the kingdom of darkness but you have a new spirit and are a child of God.
That’s why you cry out “Abba, Father” to Him (Galatians 4:6-7)! That’s who you are now, it’s your true identity in Christ.
Beloved child of the Most High!
Seeing Yourself Through Your True Identity
If God says you are perfect in Christ, then you are. God cannot lie. The fact that you are a child of God should immediately dispel insecurity, rejection, and the bad opinions of others.
You can’t think poorly of yourself anymore because you are perfect!
Don’t let anyone tell you that you’re still “not good enough” and that you have to do everything to be loved by the Father.
Don’t tell yourself that there’s still something wrong with you. That’s not true! Tell yourself this: I am perfect in Christ! I am a beloved child of God! Amen!
If you don’t know Jesus as your Savior yet, I want to give you the opportunity to invite Jesus into your life. It will change your life. If you say the words below, and if you believe them with all your heart, you will be born again: as a child of God in God’s family.
Say it out loud:
Jesus, I invite You to come into my life. I believe you are the Son of God who died on a cross to pay for the forgiveness of my sins. Thank you that my sins have also been forgiven. I receive that forgiveness and want to thank you, that from now on, I am a child of God.
When you have prayed this prayer, I want to congratulate you. You have become a ‘new creation’! The old has passed, everything has now become truly new in your life. God’s Spirit has just come to dwell in you. A new era is dawning for you with Jesus by your side.
John 14:6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
John 8:12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.”
John 11: 25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; 26 and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?”
